ABOUT THE ROLE

St. Joseph’s Care Group provides rehabilitative services through a partnership with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, offering high-quality care across diverse acute care settings. Occupational therapists are part of an interdisciplinary team that supports patients in medical, surgical, stroke, paediatric, mental health, emergency, and ICU units, promoting safe, functional discharge and meaningful participation in daily activities.​

The Forensic Occupational Therapist will manage a defined forensic caseload and carry out Occupational Therapy assessments, treatment, and evaluation of both in-patients and outpatients. They will work with patients on an individual and/or group basis to facilitate their rehabilitation, enhance their level of functioning, and work toward achieving their goals in order to maximize their level of independence.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent from an accredited occupational therapy program
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) and thorough knowledge of its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
  • Maintains/updates liability insurance on a yearly basis (as required by COTO)
  • Valid driver's license

 

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to manage a clinical practice in a health care setting
  • Ability to complete analysis, using clinical knowledge, skill and judgement to synthesize assessment information
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently, interdependently, and collaboratively within a model of interprofessional care
  • Ability to develop and maintain respectful partnerships
  • Commitment to clinical excellence and leadership in Rehabilitative care
  • Demonstrated commitment to People-Centred Care approach and principles
  • Ability to demonstrate reflective practice
  • Strong project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to use independent judgment and maintain confidentiality of records, actions, and information
  • Excellent assessment and intervention skills are required
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work

 

Extensive and demonstrated knowledge of:


* Psychiatric/mental health theories and practice
* Psychotherapy
* Assessment and treatment of addictions
* Trauma informed care
* Cognitive behavioural therapy
* Dialectical behavioural therapy
* Formal risk management strategies
* Local community resources and services
* The principles of Psychosocial Rehabilitation or a similar recovery based model of care
* Mental health legislation and its application
* The Ontario Review Board

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
